Both the author in the reading passage and the lecturer in the lecture talk about the accomplishment done by the arctic explorer, Robert Peary. Yet their viewpoints contract with each other. While the author presents three reasons to support that Peary has successfully reached the North Pole in 1909, the lecturer thinks otherwise, contending that those explanations are not solid at all and are not convincing.

First of all, while the writer states that the committee from National Geographic Society has declared Peary's success, the speaker presents opposing discourse to such a belief, reasoning that this committee was not a objective group, instead, the people in the committee were Peary's friends who also offered fund for the trip.

Second, as opposed to the conviction in the reading passage, the speaker argues that Tom's expedition to North Pole was different from Peary's therefore it was not able to make a comparison between them. Since the weather when Tom departed was a high favorable for him, it was rational to say that Tom spent less time.

Third, presented in the lecture to diminish the authenticity of the reading passage is the argument that since the photo was taken 100 years ago, it was too fade to tell any evidences showing Peary really has visited North Pole.
