Both the author in the reading passage and the lecturer in the lecture talk about the cause of the extinction of the sea cows. Yet their viewpoints contrast with each other. While the author mentions three reasons for why the sea cows became extinct, including the local hunting, the decrease of the food resource due to the ecosystem change and the European traders, the lecturer thinks otherwise, contending that those statements are not convincing.
First of all, while the writer states that the sea cows might be overhunted by the native Siberian people, the speaker presents opposing discourse to such a belief, reasoning that the sea cows were not only massive but also weighed over 10 tons normally, therefore, the Siberians did not need to hunt a lot of them for food as the population of the Siberia was not so enormous.
Secondly, as opposed to the conviction presented in the reading passage, the speaker argues that if the ecosystem disturbances really happened in 1768, it might have also made impact on other plants as well, as a result, there should be other marine animals, such as the whales, died. However, there was only the kelp extincted.
Thirdly, presented by the speaker to diminish the authenticity in the reading passage is the argument that the extinction of the sea cow happened soon after the European traders had came, it is not possible to say the last to arrive would be the main cause of the extinction which should be long existed.
