Both the author in the reading passage and the speaker talk about a painting known as attributed to Rembrandt, the most famous Dutch painter. Yet their viewpoints contrast with each other. While the author doubts that the painting is done by Rembrandt, the speaker thinks otherwise, contending that the painting of an old woman is indeed Rembrandt's work because of the examination that is done for the painting.

First of all, while the writer state that the painting is not a work by Rembrandt due to the inconsistency of the way the woman in the portrait is dressed, the speaker presents opposing discourse to such a belief, reasoning that actually the fur collar of the woman was not painted by Rembrandt. Being examined by the X-ray, people found that the pigment of fur collar was painted on top of the painting after a hundred years after it was done by Rembrandt. The speaker guesses that perhaps people who did this would like to increase the value of the painting.

Secondly, the writer points out that the painting is not from Rembrandt because of the error of light and shadow. However, as opposed to this conviction, the speaker argues that after the fur collar is removed from the painting, the original light of the collar can be seen and it is realistic accurate. Rembrandt did make the collar reflect the illumination.

Thirdly, the wood glued together seems to prove that the work is not from Rembrandt. But, presented by the speaker to diminish the authenticity is the argument that the wood glued together was also added by other people. The speaker states the reason for enlarging the painting maybe is that the person who did this would like to make it valuable. Besides, the wood of this painting is the same as other Rembrandt's works.

It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts.

Some people believe that it is important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts, whereas other people think that learning facts is the only thing that students have to do. As far as I am concerned, it is vital to learn the ideas and concepts of everything. I am willing to discuss the reasons further in the following essay.

First of all, understanding ideas can make students learn completely. That is to say, in order to learn the complete thing, it is undeniable that students have to know the reasons and the processes. Otherwise, they will just memorize the facts and are not able to tell why the results will come out and what the procedure is. For example, if teachers just tell the students that apples will always drop down to the ground without introducing the gravity, students will never know that apples will never drop in the outer space. Under this circumstance, a complete learning is not possible to happen and a successful education either.

Secondly, knowing the concepts can make students learn widely. There are always connections between each field. Once students have obtained the backgrounds of a certain field, they are capable of learning other related fields quickly. For instance, language always has a close relationship with culture. If a Japanese teachers teach students Japanese grammars by telling them the purpose of using specific grammars, the students will be able to learn Japanese culture because the use of the grammars obviously shows Japanese characteristics and traits. Besides, students can also learn the Japanese history efficiently. Therefore, learning the concepts is beneficial to students.

As has been demonstrated above, it is clear that understanding the ideas and concepts is so crucial that teachers should not just introduce a piece knowledge without explanations. Also, students have to learn a thing by always asking why and how.
