Both the author in the reading passage and the lecturer talk about several measures to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia. Yet their viewpoints contrast with each other. While the author mentions three means that might prevent the cane toad from growing, the lecturer thinks otherwise, contending that it is not easy to get rid of the cane toad and therefore, those measures may be unsuccessful.

First of all, while the writer states that one way to prevent the spread would be to build a national fence, the speaker presents opposing discourse to such a belief, reasoning that the eggs of the toads are found in the streams and rivers instead of the ground and are carried by the waterways. As a result, it is useless to build the fence because only a few eggs of the toads can cause the great population of them.

Secondly, the writer points out that the government can hold a campaign and let the volunteers capture and destroy the toads. However, as oppose to this conviction, the speaker argues that since those volunteers are untrained, they might destroy other species such as the native frogs. Because it is difficult to tell the cane toad and the young native frogs, the population of native frogs may be in danger.

Thirdly, in the reading passage, the writer indicates that the disease-causing virus might be helpful. But, presented by the speaker the diminish the authenticity is the argument that the virus will also yield an enormous damage to the ecosystem as well. The speaker says that the habitat will also be destroyed because the cane toads are native and vital to  the environment.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Successful people try new things and take risks rather than only doing what they know how to do well.

Successful people are always influential in the world. Some people believe that they love to try new things and take risks, others consider that they are more likely to do what they are adept at. From my perspective, I think that the successful people prefer to attempt things they have not done before because of their interests in exploring and bravery.

First of all, people who own success knows that only challenges can cause the progress, so they are eager for trying new things. Take Steve Jobs as an example, he is well known to all people in the world because of his significant accomplishment in the technological industry. One of his famous quotes is "Stay hungry, stay foolish" which encourages individuals not to stop experiencing. Because the eagerness for improvement assisted Steve Job to keep trying and never stop, he eventually created Apple company that has enormously changed human's lives. Consequently, successful people always give everything a taste since they know it will yield an unpredictable power to themselves and perhaps to the society.

Secondly, successful people are brave; therefore, they do take risks. Instead of being afraid that they may fail, those people possess courageous attitude which helps them to beat everything. For instance, Madame Curie, a Polish physicist, is known to the world because of her discovery of new elements. She had to confront a lot of dangerous situations while doing the experiments in her laboratory. Nonetheless, she still worked so hard and never thought of giving up. With the courage and faith, she made a great achievement and changed the world. It is normal that every person has fear; however, the bravery towards risks make people fearless. As a result, they are not afraid of running the risks.

According to the above statement, I think that people with success are more interested in doing the things that they have not experienced before instead of doing the things that they are so familiar with. After all, they are curious about everything fresh and also they understand that risks are just nothing.
