Both the author in the reading passage and the lecturer in the lecture talk about the decline of the yellow cedar in northwestern North America. While the author mentions that there are three factors, which are the insects, the brown bear and the climate change, lead to the decreasing of the yellow cedar, the lecturer thinks otherwise, contending that these three hypotheses are not authentic at all.

First of all, while the writer states that the cedar beetle is known to attack the trees and the beetle larvae eat the wood, the speaker presents opposing discourse to such a belief, reasoning that actually the yellow cedar is more resistance than other trees, therefore they will not be destroyed by the beetles. Besides, it is said that, in fact, the beetles receive damage and will die after eating the trees.

Secondly, as opposed to the conviction presented in the reading passage, the speaker argues that the declination of the yellow cedar happens in overall nation, which includes the mainland and the islands. However, there are no bears on the islands, indicating that the hypothesis of brown bear is definitely not responsible.

Thirdly, presented in the lecture to diminish the authenticity in the reading passage is that the yellow cedar can easily die on the lower elevation, which is warmer. As a result, the speaker argues that when the climate becomes colder than before, it is offering a better condition for the yellow cedar to grow.
